Snow is the photographer’s friend

A late heavy snowfall in Devon took me out early morning with my camera before a thaw set in. The sky still had that leaden look, but the sun was above the clouds and some low mist, so the light was good. Walking through a wood paths had become passages with low ceilings ready to drop snow down the necks of the unwary.

I came out into a clearing and the tree that faced me had snow on one side of its trunk and large branches that had faced the wind, whilst its top was blurred by the mist, which seamlessly merged with the snow covered ground. Snow is the photographer’s friend especially if he prefers a minimalist approach.

In another area daffodils that had flowered in response to the earlier warm conditions and lengthening days were flattened by the snowfall. Some Spring losses as well as gains then, although a few days later when the snow had gone I saw them standing upright again. Over the centuries natural selection had favoured those daffodils with springs in their stems.
